Cleaning with intention
Every Spring brings the opportunity of a new beginning. As we watch renewal happen upon the earth around us and in the trees above us, we can welcome a fresh start in ourselves and in our spaces. Of course, we have probably all heard of Spring cleaning. Maybe you have put it into practice by tidying up, reorganizing, and cleaning all the hard to reach places.
I recently learned that in Hungary, people would traditionally wash their pets on Good Friday to get ready for the coming year. A friend of mine who is Hungarian posted pictures of his cats after he gave them their annual bath. So cute and bedraggled!
Now, my pets escaped this fate, but I think I might put it on the calendar for next year! But it’s never too early, or too late, to give your home a nice Spring cleaning, both physically and spiritually. In fact, there are some ways that you can incorporate both, even into your regular routine.
How to add positivity while cleaning
One thing I have started doing myself is to make my own vinegar and water solution for daily cleaning in the kitchen and the bathroom. I prefer 2 parts water to 1 part vinegar, and then I will add a few drops of an essential oil to the solution. It helps soften the smell of the vinegar, and there are some oils that are especially helpful for raising the spiritual vibration of a home.
I like to add a few drops of lavender and clary sage essential oil to the spray I make for the bathroom. It’s just a little background aromatherapy to add to the freshly cleaned space. I chose lavender for the calm and the clary sage for emotional clearing it offers. Of course, if you have allergies to essential oils, they are not needed to cleanse your surfaces.
Another thing that I’ve done in the past is to do a weekly house blessing. This is done by doing a quick tidy up in every room in your house, spending 5-10 minutes per room. Set a timer for yourself and don’t stress if the room isn’t completely clean. It’s more important to spend some time in each room by showing a little love to the spaces you live in. Put on your favorite feel good playlist and have fun with it!
